This has to be ONE of the most enduring and yet relatively unknown dirges to rival Dylan or even Bohemian rhapsody!!!!!! I too first got hooked on this at boarding school in South Africa...

Am thinking about songs that could rival this one. Not easy.... The Strawbs: The Battle Traffic: Dear Mr fantasy Kevin Coyne: Eastbourne ladies Ten years after: Religion Pearls before swine: God save the child Hot Tuna: I see the light Tommy Bolin: Wild dogs Kevin ayers: It begins with a blessing / Once I awakened / But it ends with a curse Not the average top o' the pops...but like EBB neglected imo

Great song from the 70's. And i think that the melody from Neil Young's "Like A Hurricane" sounds a lot like this one here. EOR was released 2 or 3 years before LAH, so maybe Neil was influenced by these guys.
