Tveye, yes it would be terrible if you had a small fortune. Not once do you say, I'd give to charity, feed the homeless, help my neighbors. On the contrary, you say you'll purchase livestock for the purpose of annoying your neighbors and build staircases for no other reason then showing off. You're a gauche materialistic fool. For this, you will never be rich, despite whatever financial gains you may come into.

somethingethnic @ Feb 2, 2012

@somethingethnic It's a song, dude, chill.

FluidQueer @ Feb 2, 2012

I was writing to Tveye, how serious could I be? It's just youtube.

EtiTheCircus @ Feb 2, 2012

@somethingethnic All right, my bad.

FluidQueer @ Feb 3, 2012

@somethingethnic people with nothin dream of having something and people with these things feel big and important by giving to those less fortunate

mcivordram @ Feb 3, 2012

@mcivordram Is that a fact?

somethingethnic @ Feb 3, 2012

My initial thought was, the character is so excited about being wealthy enough to study torah all day, that he's missing the greatest lesson in the torah. Mitzvot (to do good deeds) and to give Sadaka (charity). He comes of very selfish and ignorant, perhaps that's the image the director and or composer were going for, but I now see this a very sad, ignorant song.

somethingethnic @ Feb 3, 2012

Yubby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum!

legomaster1717 @ Feb 3, 2012

While we could debate issues in volving money and what to do with it all day long, just enjoy the song it's very funny regardless if he is an ignorant fool!

legomaster1717 @ Feb 3, 2012

@somethingethnic It's a song sung by a man who has never known, and will never know, anything but crushing poverty. his parents were impoverished. his daughters will marry and remain impoverished. he and his wife will die in poverty. It's a heart-wrenching song from the point of view of a guy who really wouldn't know what to do with himself if he woke up rich. It's not a statement about Jewish theology. Have you seen the play?

youngliterati @ Feb 3, 2012

this should be sung in Polish, many Jews spoke Polish! for my Uncle!

discoolo1 @ Feb 5, 2012

If I were a rich man, I'd probably do the same things. And then wonder when I became a man.

harghblargh @ Feb 7, 2012

I'm not Jewish, but I study their religion and I just love this play so much! I went to see it once, and now I'll be performing it in April. :) I love the moral: Traditions aren't as important as what your heart tells you is right,

WarCatLove @ Feb 7, 2012

Jews: Great bankers. Great accountants. Great lawyers. Terrible architects. You hear his plans?

Snovishvishbvat @ Feb 7, 2012
