I think, as other people have said, he needs to have more emotion in his voice. I think this is a beautiful song, and they are brilliant songwriters, he just needs to show his feelings a bit more. That's why I think that Mumford & Sons cover is probably better.

dannybenoit @ Jul 1, 2011

@alwaysandeverful if you don't think he has emotion in his voice...check out their "afraid of everyone" performance on letterman.

nickfromCO @ Jul 2, 2011

@nickfromCO Yeah, that is a good performance. Maybe it's just this one, I do like they're recorded stuff...

alwaysandeverful @ Jul 3, 2011

@REMCUREBOY SO JEALOUS!

liekeistofjes @ Jul 4, 2011

In my opinion Matt's voice carries the emotion of their songs just as well as the instruments. To say that there isn't any emotion in his voice seems ludicrous. However, this is a quite underwhelming performance by him, a bit of why he's so fantastic starts to come out around 5:25, but I just don't think he was drunk/excited enough at this point! Also, are all the crowd sitting down? If they are then I don't think they're really entering into the spirit of things.

BadlyMauledBoy @ Jul 4, 2011

this shits all over the mumford and sons cover makes me depressed that people actually think its better, when I hear this song I can visualise myself in london in the rain FUCKIN INSPARATIONAL

crazyfeh12 @ Jul 6, 2011

Beautifully done!

utmatt1023 @ Jul 6, 2011

MsStrawberryfields1 @ Jul 10, 2011

@jmdirty23 sounds awesome yum

chandlereen @ Jul 13, 2011

Jesus Christ is kicking ass on the drums!

killingspeedrun @ Jul 14, 2011

This is so completely brilliant. Anyone who hasn't seen the national live has missed out on something that's more real and moving than anything I've personally ever done.

InfiniteIdentity @ Jul 18, 2011

@killingspeedrun Doesn't he always??

whitewashedlife @ Jul 22, 2011

@crazyfeh12 Mumford & Sons are one of the worst bands in history. Pissweak posh tosspots trying to be working class, lyrically dismal, repetitive farting on about heart and soul because they soooooooooo mean it, man, musically uninspired, and I could happily shove Country Winston's fucking banjo right up Country Winston's arse. Even the very worst of the shitty Britpop bands weren't as crap as Mumford & Bastards. The National on the other hand are simply fabulous.

HeartfeltDawn @ Aug 2, 2011

@HeartfeltDawn im feeling a deep deep hatred fro mumford and sons... and i like it haha

crazyfeh12 @ Aug 2, 2011

@HeartfeltDawn THAT WAS GREAT, TEAR TO MY EYE :,)

bakerbrdz @ Aug 5, 2011

I listen to this often, and it really gets me every time. The blend of band and symphonic that The National offer are pleasing to the ear. Thank You to "The National". Well done on all tracks.

ghostscantkill @ Aug 6, 2011

@HeartfeltDawn I guess you don't know a spectacular band when you see one..... all I can say.

paytonlovesyou11 @ Aug 9, 2011

Looking forward to seeing this at Reading Festival. Guaranteed England banter will be involved.

jknewcastlelol @ Aug 10, 2011

@REMCUREBOY *Arcade Fire -- not 'the arcade fire'. C:

Inkblot1218 @ Aug 14, 2011

@HeartfeltDawn Lyrically dismal?!?!??! know what you are talking about before you open your trap. Mumford is awesome! I bet The National were pleased to hear that Mumford covered their song. I am a fan of The National now because of Mumford. It's ok, some people in the world such as yourself are just jealous of real talent.

ReBeWyMmOt @ Aug 15, 2011

@ReBeWyMmOt Right, I'm jealous of Cuntford and Twats. So why am I not jealous of The National who I think are a fantastic band? Surely my heart should be raging in jealousy toward any band more successful than myself? I tell you what, let's wait for you to jump a few IQ points and then come back to me with a vaguely intelligent argument. Whilst you're at it, go through the lyrics sheet for the debut album and tot up how many times they fart on about heart and soul.

HeartfeltDawn @ Aug 16, 2011

@ReBeWyMmOt Mumford and Sons are okay. But seriously, don't compare them to The National.
